File Storage Space (Shared Drives and Folders)

Network File Storage

Colleagues are encouraged to store files that need to be secure, accessible, and backed up on the Colleges’ file server.

Network drives

Network drives are central storage space allocated to people, departments, and organizations that may be mapped from a personal computer. There are three types of often used storage folders:

  • M: drive: this folder is often called the “M drive” because it is a personal folder automatically mapped as M: for Windows computers connected to the Colleges’ domain. This personal folder has a default storage quota of 250 MB for faculty, staff and students. To directly access this folder, users can direct their file manager to \\fsrv\username$.
  • N: drive: this folder is often called the “N drive” because it is a shared folder automatically mapped as N: for Windows computers connected to the Colleges’ domain. Folders located in this location on the file server contain many subfolders for course, department and work group file sharing. These shared folders have a default disk quota of 250 MB. To directly access this folder, users can direct the file manager to \\fsrv\pccommon.
  • I: drive: this folder is often called the “I drive” because it is a shared folder automatically mapped as I: for Windows computers connected to the Colleges’ domain. This folder contains many common programs needed by students, faculty, and staff. To directly access this folder, users can direct their file manager to \\fsrv\netcommon.

File Server Disk Quota: The Colleges use a disk quota manager on its file server to ensure that disk space is available for academic purposes. If you need more disk space, please review the files you are storing on the network and delete unnecessary files. If you still need additional space after doing that, please complete the Disk Space Request form. Requests for a shared folder are made through the Help Desk or by submitting the Secure Folder Request form. Quotas for shared folders are set based on need and they are typically allocated 250 MB of disk space.

The table below summarizes the Colleges’ file storage limits.

Network backups- Files stored on the network are backed up daily (starting at 7:00 PM) by a high-speed tape backup system in the IT Services Data Center. Daily and weekly backups are kept for three months and quarterly backups are kept for three years. Requests for recovery of lost data can be made to the help desk. Please include your username, file names, and last time data was known to be good. Report lost data as soon as possible to insure full recovery. You may also complete the Restore Form to request the restoration of deleted or corrupted files.
