Computer Network Authentication FAQs

1. Why can’t I access the internet?

The new Network Registration process will prevent all computers from gaining access to all network and Internet features until you have completed a series of certification steps to assure that your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and other critical software updates.

2. Why do we have Network Registration?

Network Registration will help prevent and control widespread viruses, leading to fewer network outages. It also enhances security by ensuring that only campus users can connect computers to our network.

3. How does it work?

Before you can access any network or internet resources, you will be directed to a Web page asking you to download the Cisco Clean Access Agent, which will scan your computer for necessary security patches, anti-virus software, and operating system updates. Note: This will NOT scan any personal files or information or violate your privacy. It is for authentication purposes only.

If the scan determines your computer is fully secure, you will receive full network and Internet access. If it finds something that is not up-to-date, you will be directed to the appropriate site to download the software you need to complete registration.

4. How often will I have to go through this process?

Once your computer has been certified for the network, you will be able to access the network and Internet in any network port on campus, as well as the wireless network, HWSWireless. You will be required to recertify your computer a few times per year, as newer software and updates become available.

When you are asked to recertify, there will be on-screen instructions showing you what to do.

5. Will my current computer be allowed on the network?

You will need to be running Windows XP or Mac OS X or higher. Most new computers will come with these operating systems pre-installed. If you have an older Windows operating system, Information Technology Services has Windows XP Professional CDs available. Please check our complete list of minimum system hardware and software configurations to make sure your computer will be compatible.

6. How do I know what operating system I have?

If you have a Windows computer, right-click “My Computer” and choose “Properties.”  In the “General” tab, it will state what version of Windows you are running. Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000 and Millennium will not be allowed on the network due to security risks.

If you have an Apple computer, click the Apple in the upper left corner, and choose “About” or “About this Mac” to get your operating system version. Macintosh Computers running OS X and above will also display the ‘aqua’ Apple logo. Anything older than Mac OS X will NOT be allowed on the network due to security risks.

7. What version of Microsoft Office should I have?

Microsoft Office 2003 for Windows or 2004 for Mac are the most current versions.  If you are using an older version, we recommend purchasing an install CD at the help desk.  If you previously purchased Office XP from the help desk, you may bring in the CD for a reduced-cost upgrade CD.

When future versions of Microsoft Office release from the manufacturer, any student who already has purchased an Office CD from the help desk may trade it in for a reduced-cost upgrade.

8. Does HWS require an anti-spyware program?

While HWS does not promote or require any particular vendor’s anti-spyware program, we provide Nod32 Anti-Virus, which also removes some spyware.  However, prevention of spyware is the best protection for your computer.  Follow the links to learn more about spyware prevention as well as SPAM prevention and tips.

9. How do I upgrade my system so that it is compatible?

If you have an outdated operating system, you may purchase a Windows XP CD at the help desk, or have the help desk perform the upgrade.

Mac users with outdated operating systems will need to purchase a compatible version directly through Apple.

If you have an older computer and are not sure what kind of hardware upgrades you will need, you may bring your computer to the help desk for an evaluation and upgrade recommendations.

10. Will I be able to use my online gaming system?

To use a Playstation, Xbox, or other online gaming system on our network, please e-mail helpdesk@hws.edu or call ext. 4357 to register your system.

11. Will I be able to use my PDA or Linux computer?

To register your PDA or Linux computer, please e-mail helpdesk@hws.edu.

12. Where can I get help?

Instructions on installing and using the Clean Access Agent are available as a PDF.

If you have problems authenticating your computer, you may bring it to the IT Services help desk, located in Williams Hall. There is a setup fee, which will be billed to your student account.

Alternatively, you can attend one of our clinics to learn how to go through the network authentication process and update your system yourself.
