Telecommunications
Each dorm room has been assigned a telephone number. The telephone numbers are (315) 787-XXXX. People can call you from off campus by dialing the number you have been given. Your campus extension will be the last four digits of your telephone number. If you have subscribed to voicemail, your mail box number is also the last four digits of your telephone number. Voicemail service can be purchased for $22.50 per semester and is available on a first come, first served basis.
From your room, you can call any phone on campus, i.e. administrative, faculty or other students, by dialing the last four digits of the number. Please use this method as it is a free method for making on campus calls.
You will have the ability to receive calls and make outgoing local calls.
Campus phone service includes:
- Unlimited local calling
- Call Waiting
- Toll-free, 800, 888 and 877 calling free of charge
- Free touch-tone service
- Voicemail, available upon subscription. (Voicemail instructions are available here)
Phone Equipment
Phones are not supplied for students by the Colleges. Students need to bring a touch-tone telephone for their own use. Additionally, maintenance of the phone equipment is the student's responsibility.
Phones are supplied for faculty and staff offices by IT Services Telecommunications. Requests for equipment can be made by contacting IT Services at ext. 4357.
Long Distance Service
For students
In order to make long distance calls from your room phone, you will need to arrange for your own long distance carrier. You can use any service as long as your dialing begins with a toll-free call to your carrier of choice. For example, you could use 9-1-800-CALLATT (9-1-800-225-5488) and then follow their directions for placing and billing calls. Additionally, you can purchase pre-paid cards at The College Store or a variety of other stores. Lastly, you can set up an account and billing with a company like USA Datanet. They can be reached online or by calling 1-877-499-2368. Please feel free to e-mail helpdesk@hws.edu with any questions.
Collect or Third Party Calls
Collect or third party calls cannot be made to student phone numbers. These types of calls have been blocked on the Hobart and William Smith Colleges main number, and switchboard as well.
Calling Cards
Calling cards or pre-paid cards can come from any company; however, dialing must start with a toll-free number and calls cannot be billed to dorm phone numbers. Paetec offers its own card, which must be requested from Paetec Customer Service. Calls made on the Paetec card will appear on the students' Paetec bill. The student account is billed by a personal billing number, not the dorm phone number.
