Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr.

“In this day and age, you can't stand still,” Henry Rosenberg once said to describe his approach to business. But his reflection could easily describe his philosophy of life.

Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr., Hobart Class of 1952, your attention to detail, your balanced view of the world of business and the world of service – characterized by your many professional directorships, your philanthropy, and your long involvement in organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, the United Way, and the Kenny Krieger Institute (a hospital and school for children) – as well as your dedication to these Colleges, are but a few examples of your philosophy in action.

You have exemplified the role of “Hobart Statesman” and stand as a model for students and alumni and alumnae alike. As a student, you were elected to the Orange Key honorary society, and were a member of the Temple Club. You were also active in the Colleges' athletic squads, co-captaining your freshman lacrosse team, and captaining the varsity squad during your senior year. You presently serve on the Board of Directors of the Lacrosse Foundation.

In business, you never stood still, developing Crown Petroleum into a highly successful enterprise. Indeed, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce recently honored you as an inductee in the Maryland Business Hall of Fame.

You blend national civic engagement with a sense of responsibility to the Colleges' community, beginning with your Army service shortly after graduation, through your continued service as a member of the Colleges' Board of Trustees for more than 12 years. Your generosity to Hobart and William Smith Colleges has ensured that countless students will continue to learn, strive and discover new knowledge. The facilities in Rosenberg Hall, just beyond the Quad, include state-of-the-art biology and chemistry laboratories and research facilities. Prestigious national awards such as the Goldwater Scholarship, as well as unique undergraduate research opportunities, have been made possible by your beneficence.

A member of the Hobart Class of 1952, you celebrate your 50th reunion this year. Today we celebrate you and your efforts to ensure that these Colleges never stand still.
