Poole's life's journey has been one of making a difference for his family, community and alma mater. Hobart and William Smith Colleges proudly honor Poole for the respect he enjoys as a businessman, the devotion he shows to his children and grandchildren, the loyalty he exhibits to his many friends and the extraordinary passion he displays for the Colleges through his fine stewardship of so many of their functions.
With his admission to Hobart College he quickly seized opportunities and, like many such occasions in the years to come, became a leader. As an Economics major, his leadership skills were recognized with his election as Captain of the soccer team and his volunteer work in admissions. Later, his sense of duty to our country was evident with his selection to Officer Candidate School and his service as a Navy Lieutenant aboard the USS Cony during the Cuban missile crisis. In business, Poole has built a successful construction enterprise and has been credited with professional leadership and noteworthy philanthropy. His record of community service is one we hold out to our graduates today with respect. He has given back through important service as President of the American Heart Association and member of the Board of Directors of Mercy Hospital on Long Island.
The Colleges gratefully acknowledge Poole's numerous, significant levels of
involvement for Hobart and William Smith Colleges during 17 years as a member of the Board of Trustees. His recent gift, which created a first-class Admissions Center, is the latest of the many, varied ways he has assisted the Colleges. With his wife Mary Jane, he has created a gracious space that will welcome prospective students and their families to our campus. Future generations of students will first experience Hobart and William Smith Colleges and understand our proud history and dynamic future as a result of Poole's generous gift. As a Trustee, he has provided critical leadership on key strategic priorities. He has also been a valued friend to our student athletes, and has worked tirelessly to promote the student experience inside and outside the classroom. His leadership was sought for the important task of selecting a president of the Colleges in 1999 when the campus welcomed President Mark D. Gearan to our community.
Recognizing his enthusiastic leadership, skillful planning and longstanding commitment to Hobart and William Smith, we bestow the Colleges' highest honor upon him for the difference he has made for our students–past, present and future.
