Mary “Pat” Patterson McPherson is known internationally as a champion of higher education. Through her broad understanding and visionary initiatives, she has helped advance many liberal arts institutions. She is celebrated for her commitment to providing women and minorities with equal access to education.
Having earned degrees from Smith College and the University of Delaware, she went Bryn Mawr in 1961 to continue her studies. When a philosophy professor became ill, McPherson stepped up, taking over six courses while enrolled in graduate seminars and teaching at Delaware. By the time she earned her doctorate in 1969, she was, in her words, “hooked by the College's unique culture,” and stayed to serve Bryn Mawr for nearly 30 years as lecturer, professor, dean and president. McPherson's tenure as sixth president of Bryn Mawr was characterized by her great intellect and integrity, and many achievements of lasting impact.
In 1997, McPherson was named vice president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, where she continues to be a major force in higher education. In recent years, the Foundation has invested heavily in the liberal arts, emphasizing teaching and technology initiatives. One of McPherson's goals in this area has been to enhance foreign study programs so that students abroad can stay in close contact with faculty on their home campuses through emerging technologies. The Mellon
Foundation's generous support of Hobart and William Smith has helped fund the Office of Global Education, language technology, the Finger Lakes Institute and the environmental studies department.
Today, Hobart and William Smith Colleges recognize Pat McPherson as one of our country's great leaders in higher education. We proudly present her with the Doctorate of Humane Letters and welcome her into our community.
