Donald Aleksiewicz '73
Donald Aleksiewicz '73, known as A-Z, was the Little All-America College Division Football Player of the Year in New York as a senior. He also was an AP second-team All-American and a member of the Kodak Small College Division All-America team as a running back. He still holds the Hobart record for most rushing yardage in a season. Aleksiewicz had his jersey number (43) retired by the college. After graduation, he had tryouts with various NFL teams and played with the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League.
George Barna '29
George Barna '29 was an outstanding football and lacrosse player who continued his athletic career in the NFL with the Philadelphia Yellowjackets. While at Hobart, he was a first-team alternate All-American football player as a senior and an honorable mention All-American as a junior. Barna also was captain of the football team as a senior. Hobart football's lineman award for love of the game ("he came to play, he came to win") is named after him. He played lacrosse as a senior and earned second-team All-American honors. He also was responsible for introducing lacrosse to the Buffalo area.
Robert A. Bristol '31
Robert Bristol '31 was a Hobart trustee from 1959-79 and a member of the Alumni Council from 1959-62. The Robert A. Bristol Gymnasium, constructed in 1965, is named in his honor and his portrait hangs in the Gilman Room of the gymnasium. He was the first recipient of the Statesmen Athletic Association Annual Award in 1973. In 1981, the college held a testimonial dinner in his honor with more than 200 people attending.
Carlton J. Ferris '37
Carlton J. Ferris '37 was an All-American lacrosse player, as well as captain and Most Valuable Player of the football team. He played in the North-South lacrosse all-star game in 1936 and 1937. Ferris also worked as director of the Alumni Association at Hobart.
Richard L. Ferris '40
Richard L. Ferris '40 was a first-team All-American lacrosse player in both his junior and senior years. He also was captain of the football team and co-captain of the lacrosse team as a senior, as well as a varsity letterman for the basketball team.
Merle A. Gulick '30
Merle A. Gulick '30, a 1965 inductee of the College Football Hall of Fame, was an outstanding running back for the Statesmen football team. He served as captain of both the football and basketball teams and was a 1928 All-American in lacrosse. An active alumnus, he was the only graduate of the College to receive three alumni citations. Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1950 to 1961, he is honored through the Gulick-Vogt Memorial Athletic Fund. He received the Hobart Alumni Association's Medal of Excellence in 1972.
Dr. Augustus H. Hillman '30
Dr. Augustus H. Hillman '30 was captain of the Hobart cross-country team and was named to the All-Eastern Intercollegiate team. During his career, he broke course records at Colgate, Hamilton, Alfred, Syracuse, and Hobart. Also an outstanding student, "Gus" was a member of the first graduating class from the University of Rochester Medical School in 1929. He was president of the Hobart College Alumni Association from 1957-59 and a member of the Alumni Council for seven years.
Francis L. "Babe" Kraus '24
Francis L. "Babe" Kraus '24 was Hobart College's athletic director from 1932-1963. An outstanding coach, he is generally regarded as having the longest consecutive lacrosse coaching record in the nation (1925-66) and was a 1965 inductee of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. In his playing days, Kraus was a standout in football, basketball, and lacrosse and served as captain of the football and basketball teams. After receiving New York All-State recognition in basketball and football and All-American honors in lacrosse, Kraus played professional football for Buffalo in 1924. The "Babe Kraus Award," given annually to the Division III Coach of the Year, honors his achievements. Hobart's "Babe Kraus Memorial Award" is presented annually to the College's Student-Athlete of the Year.
Mark B. Perkins '69
Mark B. Perkins '69 is the NCAA record-holder for most carries in a game and the owner of the Hobart record for carries in a season. Perkins was an outstanding football player, who had his jersey number (24) for both lacrosse and football, retired by the College. As a senior, he was the ECAC Division III Football Player of the Year and a first-team All-America lacrosse player. Co-captain of the football team and captain of the lacrosse team, Perkins won the Babe Kraus Award as a senior, for being the top student-athlete at the College.
