Recreation and Wellness
Wellness | Aquatics | ORAP | Waterfront
Wellness is a way of living that emphasizes preventive measures such as eating a healthy diet, exercising moderately, and practicing various relaxation techniques. It is making self-care decisions that will improve one’s lifestyle and in doing so steer one to the “healthy” end of the sickness-wellness continuum. It is a positive, day-to-day approach to life.
We strive to provide services and opportunities that will meet the needs of our population in all of the areas of wellness, and we constantly seek input from the community to make sure that we stay on target with our programming.
The wellness program is located in Bristol Field House, which has its own parking lot (off Hamilton St.). Facilities and equipment include a fitness center, indoor track, various types of athletic courts, group exercise room, etc. Various fitness and wellness related programs and contests, group exercise classes, and other activities are offered routinely. Related physical education class offerings include fitness, CPR and first aid, and total body conditioning. For more information, contact Russ Hess by phone at 781-3901, or by e-mail at hess@hws.edu.
Bristol Swimming Pool is the place to swim for fitness or for fun. Swimming is a great way to get fit and stay aerobically conditioned, because it is a low impact fitness activity that improves endurance and overall well-being with minimal impact on the swimmer’s joints. The facility at Bristol Pool provides equipment to isolate body sections so the swimmer may focus on upper or lower body fitness, as well. Kick boards are available for use in the water to improve leg strength and overall tone, and pull buoys may be used to improve shoulder and arm strength and tone.
The aquatics program is located in Bristol Gym. Participants may park in the Bristol, Winn-Seeley, or Comstock lots. Facilities and equipment include locker rooms and swimming related apparatus. Open swimming is offered routinely. Related physical education class offerings include swimming, lifeguarding, water safety, and scuba. For more information, contact Kelly Kisner by phone at 781-3567 , or by e-mail at kisner@hws.edu.
ORAP serves the HWS community in a number of ways. First, it works with the student-organized and student-funded Outdoor Club to schedule and conduct outdoor outings and activities. These consist of weekend and day trips that range from backpacking and camping to kayaking to cross country skiing. ORAP also maintains a rental center that offers a modest inventory of equipment for modest prices. The rental center possesses resource material such as maps and trail guides to assist students in planning and conducting their own outdoor activities. In addition, a student-built climbing wall is available to interested members of the HWS community during specified hours.
The rental center is open on a part-time basis Mondays through Fridays during the school year and employs students who are knowledgeable about outdoor equipment and experiences.

The Waterfront program at the Colleges is designed to give students the opportunity to participate in activities combining the College’s rich natural setting with instructional expertise and administrative support. The goal of the program is student participation within the limits of funding and available resources. Consistent with the program’s wellness philosophy, emphasis is placed on the pursuit of a healthy, rigorous lifestyle through skill learning and enhancement, physical training, and competition.
Varsity crew and sailing form the foundation of the program. The Colleges, located on the shore of beautiful Seneca Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, provide a natural setting for crew and sailing. The Bozzuto Boathouse houses the Colleges' nationally ranked sailing team and also benefits the Outdoor Recreation Adventure Program. Dedicated on Oct. 25, 2003, the Bozzuto Boathouse is named in honor of Charles Bozzuto, father of the project's lead donor, Thomas S. Bozzuto '68.
"My father taught me two very important things: the value of an education ... and to always appreciate the water," Thomas Bozzuto said at the dedication ceremony. "This boathouse helps to accomplish both by opening up the waterfront and providing access for students, who I hope will have as much pleasure learning here as I had."
Waterfront equipment includes a dock and shed for boats and related equipment, which is used for the sailing class taught at the Colleges. Crew members also have access to the calm, enclosed waters of the New York Barge Canal, a remnant of the famous Erie Canal system, which provides six miles of excellent sculling water. Waterfront users may park on South Main Street. For further information contact Scott Iklé by phone at 781-3938, or by e-mail at ikle@hws.edu.
