Substance Free House
 | Substance Free House, 2006-
2007 School Year |
The Substance Free House (SFH) at Hobart and William Smith Colleges was established in 2000 when a group of students working with Residential Education and the Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Programs established living space dedicated to students who were interested in a living environment free from alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. SFH works with the Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Programs to provide alternative social space for students, campus-wide programming to reduce risks, disseminates accurate information to the HWS community, and social events on a monthly basis that are open to all HWS students.
In the spring semester, an upper-class student(s) is selected by the current house manager and the director of alcohol and other drug programs to coordinate the house the next fall. The House Manager is responsible for coordinating the weekly meetings for the house, delegating the responsibilities for the various house-sponsored events, and meeting regularly with the director of alcohol and other drug programs to plan future events and keep the director informed of the day-to-day activities of the house.
The SFH is located at 704 S. Main St and has a beautiful view of Seneca Lake and is next door to the President’s home. There are a total of 16 spaces in the house, comprised of singles and doubles. The house has a nice size lounge which makes for an excellent gathering space for meetings, studying, or just relaxing.

Residents of Sub Free, 2005-2006 School Year |
During the 2005-06 academic year SFH has grown to include a number of rooms in the newly built North building located on the hill near Emerson Hall. With the addition of these spaces the total number of living spaces is 30, with the hope to include additional spaces in 2006-07 based on student demand.
This year the House Manager is Elise Pedersen ‘06. This is Elise’s second year as the House Manager. Here is her description of SFH in her own words:
"I am a senior at Hobart and William Smith colleges. I am majoring in Arts and Education and participate in the Education Program and the MAT program HWS offers. After HWS I plan to pursue a teaching career in elementary and special education. I enjoy living in the Substance Free House for many reasons. The house creates a great community and environment that is great to live in. The commonality in the preference to live in a Substance Free environment helps everyone to create a bond with each other; creating wonderful friendships and an effective campus house. This house adds to the community in that it creates a place where students are free from any substance use. It provides a way for students to engage in the lifestyle of their choosing successfully. Additionally the house provides a number of events for students to attend free of substances and full of entertainment. There is not another place I would choose to live on campus, as this house compliments the way I choose to live."
Over the years, the SFH is best known for its Root-Beer Keg Parties. It is not uncommon to see student’s from SFH rolling the keg of root-beer down St. Clair St. Over the past two years, the house has sponsored annual events such as the Picnic Welcome party for first-year students, a Halloween Party, Safe Halloween Pledging, and Friday Night R&R. Other events this year include the Substance Free Luau and Mocktail Night.
Those students interested in living in SFH for the 2006-07 school year should contact Residential Education to obtain an application and to inquire about the deadline for submitting an application.
